Important limit: Do not assume the launch announcement confirms API availability today. Check the actual model selector and regional access before designing a paid workflow.
Plan the reference package before the prompt
For a product scene, prepare one clean product view, one frame showing the intended setting, and a short written description of what must remain unchanged. Assign a purpose to every reference: identity, lighting, camera path or performance. More files are not automatically more useful; conflicting material can make the intended result harder to evaluate.
A useful first test is a single object on a table with one deliberate camera movement. Keep the background simple enough that you can tell whether the object changes shape. Only after that shot works should you introduce a hand, a second subject or a scene transition. This is an evaluation plan, not a claim that we ran the model.
How to evaluate a 30-second scene
Write a three-beat outline before generating: the initial state, the main action and the final state. For example, an unbranded ceramic cup sits on a counter, a hand rotates it once, and the shot ends with the handle facing the camera. Give each beat time to breathe instead of adding unrelated actions to fill the duration.
Inspect the beginning, the middle and the final frame, then scrub through every transition. Record whether the cup keeps the same handle, whether the hand stays anatomically plausible and whether the light changes without motivation. A long exported file is not evidence of a usable long take. If one small section breaks, compare a targeted edit with a full regeneration and record the additional cost.
What to verify before building around it
The announcement names a platform rollout and describes API access as coming soon. That statement is dated evidence, rather than a live service-status check. Before integrating, obtain the exact model identifier, available region, account entitlement, task limits, price unit and output retention rules from the provider you intend to use.
Keep a small manifest next to each saved clip: provider, model version, input references, prompt, duration, output size, generation date and charged credits. If a third-party gateway exposes a similarly named model, verify which underlying version it runs. Do not assume a shared marketing name means matching settings, access or billing.
Decide using your own accepted shots
Our workflow recommendation is an editorial inference from the documented controls. We have not run a controlled benchmark or purchased a test batch for this guide. Compare the same required scene across the tools you can actually access, then record acceptance rate, edit time and total cost.
Keep a usable shot only when it meets the brief at delivery size. A model with a smaller advertised limit can still be a practical choice for a short project. For a fair test, keep the required subject, action and framing consistent while adapting syntax to each tool’s documented controls.
Compare the task, then the alternative
Runway’s Gen-4.5 help page documents short text- and image-led generation at 720p base output. These are different production capabilities, not evidence of a quality winner. Add an alternative to your shortlist only when it supports an important requirement of your shot. Use the directory to examine the details before starting a paid pilot.
