Continuity

# Keep a character recognizable across AI video shots

Character consistency starts with a stable identity reference and a manageable shot plan. Review the face, wardrobe, proportions and props across the whole sequence; a matching first frame is not enough.

## Define the identity anchors

List a few visible characteristics that need to remain fixed, such as hairstyle, jacket color and a distinctive accessory. Use a fictional character or a person whose image you are authorized to use. Keep the reference pack internally consistent in age, costume and facial appearance.

Avoid asking the model to infer an unseen side of a complex costume when you can provide a useful authorized reference. A front view and a three-quarter view may help clarify your brief, but the exact number and kind of references depend on the selected tool.

## Break the scene into independently reviewable shots

Plan a wide establishing shot, a medium action and a close detail instead of one shot that changes every element. Keep the wardrobe and important prop descriptions stable. Give each shot one main action and record the intended screen direction.

If a character exits toward the right and enters the next shot from the wrong side, identity alone will not preserve continuity. Track position, gaze direction, lighting and the state of objects. A closed umbrella should not reappear open without an action explaining the change.

## Use the controls the exact model exposes

Seedance and Kling describe reference inputs, while Google documents conversational editing. These capabilities suggest different ways to carry information forward; they do not guarantee identical identity preservation. Read the controls for the actual model and access surface you are using.

Test a low-complexity shot before committing the whole scene. If the tool supports a reference or end-frame control, save which file you used and what purpose it served. Do not assume a feature in a platform’s image tool also exists in its video model.

## Use a continuity contact sheet

Choose a representative frame from the start, middle and end of each candidate shot. Put them in sequence and compare the character’s defining features, costume and props. Then review the full videos, because a contact sheet can miss temporary transformations.

Keep one approved shot as a visual anchor for the scene. If the next shot differs, identify whether the problem is identity, viewpoint, lighting or the prompt. Changing all four at once makes the next attempt difficult to interpret.

## Know when to redesign the scene

For repeated close dialogue, fast turns or significant occlusion, consistency can become the dominant production cost. If your test cannot reliably preserve a required detail, simplify the shot, reduce the movement, use recorded footage or redesign the sequence around what you can approve.

Track rejected attempts when comparing models. A single attractive example is insufficient evidence that a character can support a whole narrative. We do not publish a character-consistency winner without a disclosed test set and results.
